Bayern (Bavaria)

Bavaria is Germany's largest and oldest state.  It covers over 75,500 sq. km. and with the population of 12.5 million concentrated in large cities and towns there is plenty of open country, lakes, mountains and forests to enjoy.  You can get detailed information from the official website here - it's in English - and they have a tourism section here.

 You'd be hard pressed to do justice to the whole area in a single trip so we would advise you to concentrate on one of the main centres, such as:

München (Munich) for its Märzen and light or dark bottom-fermented beers;
Bamberg with ten breweries in the beautiful town and the chance to try its famous Rauchbier (smoked beer - you love it or hate it, but it's one of our favourite German styles);
Nürnberg (Nuremberg)
another attractive city and a good central location where you can try many of the local styles or from where you can easily make trips to other Bavarian must-sees.
