Düsseldorf

Tourism
We had never paid much attention to
Düsseldorf, which we had always assumed was a boring industrial city.  But when we made the journey in 2006 to try its very own Altbier we were surprised and delighted to discover a charming Altstadt (literally old town, though the mediæval-looking area is largely re-built) on the banks of the Rhein. The Alstadt has the nickname of the longest bar in the world and you'll find that all the best Alt brewery taps are within easy walking (crawling?) distance of each other.  The Alstadt has its own website here - in German, although you should manage to get a good idea of what it's all about from the pictures.  (Tip, click on the word 'Fernglas' just below the panoramic city view, and you'll get a pair of binoculars to see it more closely!)  The city's official tourist website does have an English version to help you with sightseeing and accommodation and the municipal website appears to have an English version, but the link to tourism currently reverts to German - this site does however have a link to a useful city map.  And for general information about Düsseldorf (and most other locations) I've found the Wikipedia entry very useful.
