Belgian Beers

Heavenly Beers - Abbey & Trappist Ales

 (Course No K0702F fee £25)
Saturday 24 November 2007 10.00 – 13.30*

Most beer buffs would agree that the top beer-producing country is Belgium, and that the top beers from Belgium are those produced in the styles developed over hundreds of years by the monastic institutions.  Today these are categorised as 'Abbey' beers, whereas the prestigious 'Trappist' appellation is applied only to those beers made in the 7 recognised Trappist abbeys by the monks themselves.

We shall cover the history of monastic brewing, the main styles of beer and taste up to 15 representative examples, including a couple of surprise visitors in the same style from outside the borders of Belgium.

Learn to distinguish the main styles of these beers, their different roles and application to food, and be aware of your own preferences; also find out where to obtain these 'Heavenly Beers'.

Suitable for anyone who is legally and medically allowed to drink alcohol,  and is ready to appreciate what is reckoned to be the peak of brewing perfection.
